Freda welcomed me into the family and we loved to write to each other across the miles. It was good to get her perspective on how to survive a house move across the Atlantic! Visiting her with Catherine and Hannah was such a pleasure and I will always remember how she would marvel at the chunky baby arms and legs and talk about their beautiful 'bracelets' of squidgy babiness. She was there for me as a new mum when I would ring for chats on long pushchair walks trying to get little ones off to sleep. And she always asked how we enjoyed Brighton and whether we were nicely settled, perhaps checking the streets were not so mean as one of her crime novel favourites Peter James might suggest!
